Michelia chapensis

Michelia chapensis is a a rare species in Hong Kong listed under the 100 rare and precious plants of Hong Kong and protected under the Forestry Regulation cap. 96A in Hong Kong. Like most other members in the family Magnoliaceae, its flower is protogynous where stigma matures before stamens, self-compatible and pollinated by beetles. It is only found in the montane forests and restricted to Tai Mo Shan region in Hong Kong. It flowers in March and fruits mature in November or December. Like most other Magnoliaceae species in Hong Kong, seedling or young tree of M. chapensis is mostly absent from its natural range indicating its poor natural recruitment and reproduction.
